Hercules: Handel's Tragic Musical Drama

Handel's Hercules is an opera in all but name; it was written to be performed without costumes and staging like an oratorio, but Handel's history as an operatic composer shines through in the intense music and heart-wrenching drama of the piece.

The story begins with Dejanira, wife of Hercules, awaiting her husband's return from battle. She shares her anguish with the herald Lichas and her son, Hyllus, who swears to roam the Earth until he finds his father. Hercules returns home, glorious in battle and with the beautiful princess Iole in his captivity. Dejanira's joy is soon overcome with jealousy, and she decides to win Hercules back by gifting him the robe of the centaur Nessus (which is poisoned, unbeknownst to her) ultimately killing her husband. Her grief is starkly opposed to the happiness of the new couple, Hyllus and Iole, who will now rule together over Trachis.

Yeoman Of The Guard

The New London Opera Group returns to the Riverhead Theatre for its final visit with a new production of Gilbert & Sullivan's comic opera masterpiece, The Yeomen of the Guard.

The courageous Colonel Fairfax is imprisoned in the Tower of London on a false charge and condemned to die. Nobly resigned to his fate, Fairfax hastily marries Elsie, a travelling singer (herself promised in marriage to a jester, Jack Point), to prevent his estate from falling into the hands of his accuser after his execution. But when the Colonel is liberated from his cell by his allies among the Yeomen of the Guard, the fortunes of all who live within the Tower’s grim walls are upturned, with outcomes romantic, comic, and tragic.

For this production, the stage of the Louth Riverhead Theatre will be transformed into an Elizabethan playhouse, as the New London Opera Group brings the theatrical past to life.

Containing some of the very best music ever composed by Sullivan, with Gilbert’s characteristic wit investigating themes of love, honour, fate and farce, The Yeomen of the Guard promises an evening of song and dance, mirth and melancholy, intrigue and subterfuge. Join us for our “last hurrah” in Louth!
