Volunteers Week 2025: Meet Laura

Laura as Fairy Bow Belle in Dick Whittington

My name is Laura, I am 31 and I currently volunteer on Box Office, and as a licensed children’s chaperone (as well as performing as and when I can). I am not sure the exact length of time that I’ve been volunteering, but possibly for around 10 years at least in varying roles, so a long time!

I started with the Playgoers performing on the stage when I was 15/16 years old, and wanted to give back to the theatre that meant so much to me, and to many others. I love connecting with the other volunteers, we are all there to support and help each other, and have a good time whilst doing so!

What I enjoy most about volunteering is giving back to the theatre, and the community. The theatre very much relies on its volunteers, in all different departments, there is something for everyone whether is in props, wardrobe, sound/ lighting, backstage, front of house or even on the stage! Another thing I really enjoy about volunteering at the theatre is the diverse range of people involved—different ages, backgrounds, and experiences all coming together. It’s always interesting, and no two days feel the same. There’s such a great energy around the place, and you’re constantly learning something new just by being part of it.

One interesting thing about my time volunteering is that I did meet my husband at the theatre! Over ten years ago, and we’ve performed in many shows together! He is the current chairman, and volunteers himself in many departments.

I would absolutely recommend volunteering to others, it is a great way to connect with others, build skills and increase your confidence! There is something for everyone at the theatre, and we would love to have you on board! So, if you are thinking about volunteering, reach out and give it a go! There is nothing to lose, you may even make some lifelong friends on the way! Everyone is there to help and support you, and everyone is super friendly!
