Meet The Cast - Nunsense

Nunsense is a wildly successful musical comedy that began as a line of quirky greeting cards before evolving into a cabaret and eventually a full-length stage show by Dan Goggin. The plot centres on five nuns from the Little Sisters of Hoboken who must raise money to bury residents of their convent; all of whom were accidentally poisoned by their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God. To fund the burials, they stage a riotous variety show filled with singing, dancing, and zany antics. Premiering Off-Broadway in 1985, Nunsense ran for over 3,600 performances, became a global sensation with thousands of productions in dozens of languages, and spawned multiple sequels, recordings, and a televised adaptation. With its mix of heartfelt humour and eccentric characters, including a circus-loving Mother Superior and a ballerina wannabe, Nunsense remains a beloved favourite of community theatres and audiences worldwide.

We recently held auditions to find some talented performers to play the hilarious characters, and we now have an outstanding cast! So, without further ado, meet the cast of Nunsense:

The head of the convent is Sister Mary Regina (Mother Superior), a greatly respected, yet feisty woman. She struggles to keep the antics at bay but always has her guard up, at least in front of the Sisters. Playing this role is Nicola Law, a well-seasoned performer who has been performing with Playgoers for many years. Nicola has played Donkey in Shrek, Mrs Beauregarde in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and also The Girl in Tell Me On A Sunday.

Sister Mary Hubert is the Mistress of Novices, however, has ambitions of becoming Mother Superior and therefore is always in competition with Sister Mary Regina. Maternal and full of wisdom for the most part, she is also known to let loose. Taking on the role is Hayley Wrightam. This show will be her first onstage role in 5 years having taken more creative backstage roles in recent years. Her first role with Playgoers was back in 2018 as Ronnette in Little Shop of Horrors. Performances elsewhere include Kate Monster/Lucy the Slut in Avenue Q, Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes and Nancy in Oliver.

The rough and tough, jokester of the convent is Sister Robert Anne. She was once a delinquent as a child, and that still shines through in Sisterhood as she is finding herself always challenging authority. Sophie Burgess is the actress tasked with this role. Sophie is another seasoned performer having been performing for many years. Having played roles such as Liesl in The Sound of Music, Swallow in Whistle Down The Wind and Nancy in Oliver. She recently took part in her first play in last year’s two hander Anything is Possible If You Think About It Hard Enough.

Sister Mary Amnesia is a character who lives up to her name as she has lost her memory and doesn’t have the foggiest idea who she is, other than that she is a nun. This nun is described as spacey, incoherent and at times rather inappropriate. Sophie Browne is the actress taking on this part. Sophie joined Playgoers in 2023, playing Bet in Oliver and since then has appeared in Dick Whittington, three concerts and most recently as the leading lady in the brand-new musical, Dressing Rooms.

The final character is the novice, Sister Mary Leo. Sister Leo has the rather odd ambition of becoming the world’s first nun ballerina. She is still learning the ways of the convent and is coming to terms with her decisions to join. Taking on the final role of this cast is Mollie Tunnicliffe, a performer who is returning to the stage after a long time. Mollie has remained a part of Playgoers through her role in the tech department; however, she started as a performer with the Playgoers back when she was a teenager in shows such as Return to the Forbidden Planet, Bugsy Malone, Goodnight Mr Tom, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

This cast is extremely strong and will be one NOT to miss. Nunsense is on Wednesday 5th - Saturday 8th November 2025 and tickets are currently on early bird, so make sure you book to see this show!
